Sound Lounge ups Becca Falborn to EP 

New York’s Sound Lounge, an audio post house that provides sound services for advertising, television and feature films, has promoted Becca Falborn to executive producer.

In her new role, Falborn will manage the studio’s advertising division and supervise its team of producers. She will also lead client relations and sales. Additionally, she will manage Sound Lounge Everywhere, the company’s remote sound services offering, which currently operates in Boston and Boulder, Colorado.

“Becca is a smart, savvy and passionate producer, qualities that are critical to success in her new role,” said Sound Lounge COO and partner Marshall Grupp. “She has developed an excellent rapport with our team of mixers and clients and has consistently delivered projects on time and on budget, even under the most challenging circumstances.”

Falborn joined Sound Lounge in 2017 as a producer and was elevated to senior producer last year. She has produced voiceover recordings, sound design, and mixing for many advertising projects, including seven out of the nine spots produced by Sound Lounge that debuted during this year’s Super Bowl telecast.

A graduate of Manhattan College, Falborn has a background in business affairs, client services and marketing, including past positions with the post house Nice Shoes and the marketing agency Hogarth Worldwide.

Sound Lounge Film+Television adds Atmos mixing, Evan Benjamin

Sound Lounge’s Film + Television division, which provides sound editorial, ADR and mixing services for episodic television, features and documentaries is upgrading its main mix stage to support editing and mixing in the Dolby Atmos format.

Sound Lounge Film + Television division EP Rob Browning says that the studio expects to begin mixing in Dolby Atmos by the beginning of next year and that will allow it to target more high-end studio features. Sound Lounge is also installing a Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite, a custom hardware/software solution for preparing Dolby Atmos content for Blu-ray and streaming release.

It has also added veteran supervising sound editor, designer and re-recording mixer Evan Benjamin to its team. Benjamin is best known for his work in documentaries, including the feature doc RBG, about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as well as documentary series for Netflix, Paramount Network, HBO and PBS.

Benjamin is a 20-year industry veteran with credits on more than 130 film, television and documentary projects, including Paramount Network’s Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story and HBO’s Baltimore Rising. Additionally, his credits include Time: The Kalief Browder Story, Welcome to Leith, Joseph Pulitzer: Man of the People and Moynihan.

Sound Lounge offers remote audio post between NYC, Boston

New York City-based Sound Lounge is now providing remote audio post and sound mixing services for clients based in Boston. Sound Lounge Everywhere was established to provide clients with the comforts of a mixing studio and seamless remote connection to Sound Lounge artists — along with video and audio for realtime sessions, all using premiere technology.

In creating this service, Sound Lounge partnered with Boston-based creative editorial company Editbar, who will manage the Sound Lounge Everywhere technology. Custom hardware allows Sound Lounge to stream high-quality audio and video from New York to Boston with virtually zero latency, meaning that clients can view their spots live while their talent records in the New York office. The technology also allows clients to speak face-to-face with their sound mixers to ensure their sessions are both efficient and effective.

“We believe that geography is now an opportunity rather than a boundary, and we’re excited to work with new brands and agencies in this unique fashion,” says Sound Lounge partner, COO and sound designer Marshall Grupp.

Sound Lounge and Editbar (pictured above) are also joining forces with creative studio Nice Shoes, who are in the same space as Sound Lounge, to offer sound, color and creative editorial all underneath one roof.

While Sound Lounge Everywhere is currently only being offered between New York and Boston, the studio expects to offer these services in other cities in the near future.

Can you describe your company?
Sound Lounge is an audio post company that provides creative services for TV and radio commercials, feature films, television series, digital campaigns, gaming and other emerging media. Artist-owned and operated, we’re made up of an incredibly diverse, talented and caring group of people who all love the advertising and film worlds.

We recently celebrated Sound Lounge’s 18th birthday. I’m proud to say I’ve been a part of the SL family for over 13 years now, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of friends to hang out with every day.

What’s your job title?
Senior Mixer/Sound Designer

What does that entail?
I have actors in my booth all day recording VO (voiceover) for different commercials. My clients (usually brands, ad agencies, production companies, or editorials) hang in my room, and together we get the best possible read from the actor while they’re in the booth. I then craft sound design for the spot by either pulling sound effects from my library or recreating the necessary sounds myself (a.k.a. “Foley”). Once that’s set, I’ll take the lines the actor recorded, the sound effects I created, and any music, and then mix them all together so the spot sounds perfect (and is legal for TV broadcast)!

Being a mixer in the advertising post world isn’t easy. I also have to be able to provide a solid lunch recommendation — I always need to make sure I know where my clients can get the best sushi in the Flatiron district!

What would surprise people the most about what falls under that title?
That most of us are musicians who wanted to be rock stars but thought better of it. Maybe that isn’t so surprising though.

What’s your favorite part of the job?
The people, and the social part of the advertising industry. This business is filled with so many kind, funny and talented people, and it’s so nice to have them be a part of your life. And how can you beat partying every year at the MOMA for the AICP Gala?

What’s your least favorite?
Probably the lack of travel. I love our office, but it would be fun to do my job in different cities once in a while.

What is your favorite time of the day?
Walking in my front door and seeing my wife and kids.

If you didn’t have this job, what would you be doing instead?
Something that involves beaches and nice weather.

How early on did you know this would be your path?
I totally fell into this profession. I went to school to become a music engineer/producer. I had no idea there was a whole industry for mixing TV spots. Once I got into it though, I knew immediately that I loved it.

Can you name some recent projects you have worked on?
I worked on some really nice pieces for Maybelline, Google, Lincoln and TD Ameritrade.

What is the project that you are most proud of?
Miracle Stain, a Super Bowl commercial that I mixed for Tide a few years back. I finished the mix at 10pm on Thursday and got a call at 2am that there had been some changes, so I had to come back to work in the middle of the night. I tweaked the mix until the sun came up and had it ready to ship by 9am. It was one of those very epic projects that had all the classic markings of a Super Bowl spot.

Name three pieces of technology you can’t live without.
My iPhone, my DSLR camera and iZotope RX.

What social media channels do you follow?
I’m a big Instagram guy. I love seeing people’s lives told through photos. Facebook is so 2015.

Do you listen to music while you work? Care to share your favorite music to work to?
Since I work in audio I can’t listen to music while I work, but when I’m not working I listen to a lot of modern country music, Dave Matthews Band (not afraid to say it!), prog metal and pretty much everything in between.

This is a high stress job with deadlines and client expectations. What do you do to de-stress from it all?
I just leased a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. There’s nothing like putting the top down and taking a drive to the beach!
