SoldAnim to demo virtual production tech with Muto camera system

SolidAnim, which makes virtual production products, will showcase the latest version of its SolidTrack solution, combined with XD Motion’s Muto, at SATIS 2015.

The combination of Solidtrack, with XD Motion‘s aerial filming systems, offers broadcasters and filmmakers a solution to use and integrate live virtual effects. The combined systems can be used in feature films, broadcast shows, sports, advertising and commercials. The SolidTrack system is compatible with any camera and supports high speeds.

SolidAnim will present a special demo at its booth at SATIS, showcasing SolidTrack’s new version combined with Muto. SolidTrack is a realtime camera tracking solution for recording camera moves and logging data on the virtual set and the Muto is a very light cable camera system. With its onboard engine and power supply, it is designed to be rigged very quickly, either indoor or outdoor. Useful for the integration of post effects, the motion control version is able to reproduce multi positions and movements. The XD Motion gyro-stabilitzed Mini Flight head is also motion control.

SolidTrack’s new version includes a box that gathers all tracking and other data in a single wire, which makes the organization of data and global information significantly easier. In addition, a new feature to genlock SolidTrack tracking data and the film camera has been implemented. This two-way synchronization ensures there are no frame delays.

Gaining more control over VFX shoots

By Randi Altman

During IBC this year, I saw many companies, some I was familiar with and some that were new to me. One I was eager to get to know was SolidAnim.

Alas, fate intervened. Well, more accurately, the size of the RAI Conventions Center where IBC took place intervened — it is huge and has a crazy amount of exhibit halls to navigate through. I never made it there (damn you RAI, shaking fist in air!). But happily I did get to connect with the company’s Lamia Nouri on a call recently.

Founded by three artists — mocap supervisors and animation directors Isaac Partouche, Emmanuel Linot and Jean-Francois Szlapka — this French animation company was born in Continue reading

Lightcraft, SolidAnim partner to supply optical, markerless tracking for RT VFX, on-set visualization

Venice, California — Lightcraft Technology, here, and Paris-based SolidAnim, developers of on-set virtual tracking equipment and visualization software, are combining their Previzion and SolidTrack product offerings in order to provide a full range of virtual production tools for the entertainment industry.

Both companies have entered into a mutual distribution agreement to sell each other’s products in conjunction with their own products in their respective regions, thus supplying their customers with a single source for both optical and markerless tracking for realtime visual effects and on-set visualization systems.

Filmmakers and television producers, sensitive to today’s tightening budgets, need to use a variety of tools and techniques to provide reliable and accurate camera tracking data for use in both real time compositing and post processed visual effects shots.

Typically filmmakers have to wait for post to finish in order to view completed visual effects shots, or build expensive and complex custom solutions requiring teams of experts in order to see the combination of live action and computer generated backgrounds while shooting. Targeting this area, both SolidAnim and Lightcraft had independently developed their own approaches to providing affordable solutions for the tracking and visualization of complex VFX shots, including green screen compositing, 3D rendering, and complex camera moves.

With this agreement, both companies can now provide their customers with the option to use any type of camera tracking whether it is encoded cranes, optical tracking or markerless tracking while still using their preferred solution to visualize and composite the live action elements and backgrounds.

According to Eliot Mack, CEO of Lightcraft Technology (http://www.lightcrafttech.com), “It is impossible to find a single tracking technique that will work in every scenario. In fact, we have found that often you will need to use a combination of techniques to produce a tracking result that is both accurate and stable enough to use in live compositing.”

Isaac Partouche, CEO of SolidAnim (www.solid-track.com), adds, “We have had to concentrate on building a tracking solution that is fast and easy to set up while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to a constantly changing production environment. Now, with the combination of our two companies’ products, we can provide both the flexibility and speed of markerless tracking with the accuracy and stability of the Previzion system for finishing in camera for which Lightcraft is known.”

Both companies’ systems have been used in VFX-heavy productions. Lightcraft’s Previzion system has been used on the ABC series V, Once upon a Time, and Pan Am as well as the feature film Alice in Wonderland. SolidAnim SolidTrack was used on Da Vinci’s Demons in 2012 and is currently being used by Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey (2014).

In addition to its own SolidTrack product, SolidAnim will now be able to distribute Lightcraft’s Previzion system in Europe (EEMA), while Lightcraft will distribute the SolidAnim SolidTrack markerless tracking system in the Americas.
