Rohde & Schwarz’s storage system R&S SpycerNode shipping

First shown at IBC 2018, Rohde & Schwarz’s new media storage system, R&S SpycerNode, is now available for purchase. This new storage system uses High Performance Computing (HPC), a term that refers to the system’s performance, scalability and redundancy. HPC is a combination of hardware, file system and RAID approach. HPC employs redundancy using software RAID technologies called erasure coding in combination with declustering to increase performance and reduce rebuild times. Also, system scalability is almost infinite and expansion is possible during operation.

According to Rohde & Schwarz, in creating this new storage system, their engineers looked at many of the key issues that impact on media storage systems within high-performance video editing environments — from annoying maintenance requirements, such as defraging, to much more serious system failures, including dying disk drives.

R&S SpycerNode features Rohde & Schwarz‘s device manager web application that makes it much easier to set up and use Rohde & Schwarz solutions in an integrated fashion. Device manager helps to reduce setup times and simplifies maintenance and service due to its intuitive web-based UI-operated through a single client.

To ensure data security, Rohde & Schwarz has introduced data protection systems based on erasure coding and declustering within the R&S SpycerNode. Erasure coding means that a data block is always written including parity.

Declustering is a part of the data protection approach of HPC setups (formerly known as RAID). It is software based, and in comparison to a traditional RAID setup the spare disk is spread over all other disks and is not a dedicated disk. This will decrease rebuild times and reduce performance impact. Also, there are no limitations with the RAID controller, which results in much higher IOPS (input/output operations per second). Importantly, there is no impact on system performance over time due to declustering.

R&S SpycerNode comes in multiple 2U and 5U chassis designs, which are available with NL-SAS HDD and SAS SSDs in different capacities. An additional 2U24 chassis design is a pure Flash system with main processor units and JBOD units. A main unit is always redundant, equipped with two appliance controllers (AP). Each AP features two 100Gb interfaces, resulting in four 100Gbinterfaces per main unit.

The combination of different chassis systems makes R&S SpycerNode applicable to a very broad range of applications. The 2U system represents a compact, lightweight unit that works well within mobile productions as well as offering a very dense, high-speed storage device for on-premise applications. A larger 5U system offers sophisticated large-scale storage facilities on-premise within broadcast production centers and post facilities.

IBC 2015 Blog: Rainy days but impressive displays, solutions

While I noted in my first post that we were treated to beautiful weather in Amsterdam during the first days of IBC 2015, the weather on day four was not quite as nice… it was full of rain and thunderstorms, the latter of which was heard eerily through the RAI Exhibition Centre.

Rohde & Schwarz’s next-gen Clipster is finally here and is a standout — built on an entirely new hardware platform. It’s seamless, simplified, faster and looks to have a hardware and software future that will not require a forklift upgrade. 

Colorfront, also a leader in on-set dailies solutions, has hit the mark with its Transkoder product. The new HDR mathematical node is nothing less than impressive, which is nothing less than expected from Colorfront engineering.

UHD and HDR were also forefront at the show as the need for higher quality content continues to grow, and I spent day four examining these emerging display and delivery technologies. Both governments and corporate entities are leading the global community towards delivery of UHD to households starting in 2015, so I was especially interested in seeing how display and content providers would be raising the standards in display tech.

Sony, Samsung and Panasonic (our main image) all showcased impressive results to support UHD and HDR, and I’m looking forward to seeing what further developments and improvements the industry has to offer for both professional and consumer adoption.

Overall, while its seemed like a smaller show this year, I’ve been impressed by the quality of technology on display. IBC never fails to deliver a showcase of imagination and innovation and this year was no different.

Rohde & Schwarz upgrades Clipster for IMF, adds Venice 4K

Rohde & Schwarz DVS has added key functions to its R&S Clipster IMF mastering workflow, including IMF-compliant closed captions and subtitles, composition playlist markers and forensic watermarking. The additional functions are aimed to make R&S Clipster’s IMF workflow a complete solution for UHD, 3D and Rec. 2020 mastering.

In the new version, the timeline can be used as usual to arrange all the content, including captions and subtitles. An integrated IMF delivery tool guides users through all the necessary steps to ensure the package they have created is IMF-compliant. Users can also play back UHD IMF content in real time for visual quality control. R&S Clipster now also supports NexGuard forensic watermarking, which lets content owners and their vendors protect prerelease content up to UHD and 4K.

Meanwhile, Rohde & Schwarz has expanded its R&S Venice ingest and production server product line with the new R&S Venice 4K server. With the new server, TV studios can set up file-based studio production workflows in 4K that, according to the company, can be as fast as similar HD workflows. R&S Venice 4K allows direct recording in 4K without any time-consuming stitching processes. At the same time, the material is converted to HD-SDI and saved as a file. This parallel generation of both HD and 4K content provides TV studios with a feasible transition option until content is broadcast entirely in 4K.

Rohde & Schwarz will be showing new features on the R&S Clipster at NAB 2015, which, according to the company, will offer a complete solution for UHD, 3D and Rec. 2020 mastering — including IMF-compliant closed captions & subtitles, composition playlist markers, and forensic watermarking.

Among other functions, Rohde & Schwarz DVS has added key features to offer a complete IMF workflow from a single solution: timeline marker authoring, captions, subtitles and forensic watermarking. The timeline can be used as usual to arrange all the content, including captions and subtitles. The integrated IMF delivery tool guides users through all the necessary steps so they are safe in the knowledge they have created a compliant IMF package.

Clipster also offers realtime playback of UHD IMF content, thus facilitating the visual quality control process. Support for UHD, captions, and subtitles also help smooth the transition to file-based workflows. 

R&S Clipster supports NexGuard forensic watermarking, so content owners and their vendors can protect pre-release content up to UHD & 4K with forensic watermarking.

IBC Blog: How I spent my last day at the show

There was so much to cover at the IBC show in Amsterdam, but I’ve tried to share as much as I could about the experience and the technology I’ve seen. Here is one more for you. I hope you’ve enjoyed my insights!

One of the most interesting items I saw at this year’s show was NCAM, which is a camera tracking system that uses a small sensor bar mounted at the front of a camera, which captures positional and rotational data as well as focal length. It feeds that info into its tracking server. This allows all that info to be fed into third-party applications so motion graphics or 3D objects can be placed into the shot so they appear as if they’re part of the landscape. NCAM had a spot in FilmLight’s booth, so I was able to get a demo of their system.

Rohde & Schwarz DVS ups Andreas Loges to CEO

Hanover, Munich, Germany — Rohde & Schwarz and the DVS board of directors have promoted Andreas Loges to CEO of the company.
