Music and sound company Barking Owl has made its first New York hire with sound designer/mixer Dan Flosdorf. His addition comes as the LA-based company ramps up to open a studio in New York City this summer.
Flosdorf’s resume includes extensive work in engineering, mixing and designing sound and music for feature films, commercials and other projects. Prior to his role at Barking Owl, Flosdorf was mixer and sound designer at NYC-based audio post studio Heard City for seven years.
In addition to his role at Heard City, Flosdorf has had a long collaboration with director Derek Cianfrance creating sound design for his films The Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine. He also worked with Ron Howard on his feature, Made in America. Flosdorf’s commercial work includes working with brands such as Google, Volvo, Facebook and Sprite and multiple HBO campaigns for Watchmen, Westworld and Game of Thrones.
Leading up to the opening of Barking Owl’s NYC studio, Flosdorf is four-walling in NYC and working on projects for both East and West Coast clients
Even with the COVID crisis, Barking Owl’s New York studio plans continue. “COVID-19 has been brutal for our industry and many others, but you have to find the opportunity in everything,” says Kelly Bayett, founder/creative director at Barking Owl. “Since we were shut down two weeks into New York construction, we were able to change our air systems in the space to ones that bring in fresh air three times an hour, install UV systems and design the seating to accommodate the new way of living. We have been working consistently on a remote basis with clients and so in that way, we haven’t missed a beat. It might take us a few months longer to open there, but it affords us the opportunity to make relevant choices and not rush to open.”
