Behind the title…
Bridging the gap between the technical and creative.
NAME: John Kleber
COMPANY: Harbor Picture Company
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY?
Harbor is an artist-built, talent-driven company providing a full range of services to the film and television community in New York City. We built our facility to foster creativity and encourage collaboration. By working with the best talent and technology, we are able to provide an elegant production pipeline that is sufficiently flexible and scalable to meet the needs of any production.
WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE?
Chief Technology Officer
WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
I direct and manage all processes related to the operation and support of the digital ecosystem at Harbor. I provide strategies and solutions dealing with new media, content acquisition, processing and delivery in the broadcast and film industries. I also designed and manage the Digital Lab and oversee the practices and policies regarding Harbor’s color science and Digital Cinema compliance.
WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE THE MOST ABOUT WHAT FALLS UNDER THAT TITLE?
I still set up phones and fix the coffee maker or the toilet when it’s broken; there is a fine line between handy man and engineer sometimes.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
Working on really complex problems without a net, and the moments of discovery where everything comes rapidly into focus and the solution is there in front of you— I live for those moments.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Many people don’t immediately realize that what I do is, fundamentally, a creative process. This means that timeframes are often compressed in ways that don’t afford a lot of room for deliberation or innovation.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY?
Early mornings with a cup of coffee, when everyone is excited about what the day holds.
IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THIS JOB, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD?
I would be playing music full time, touring with my band and building custom guitar amplifiers.
CAN YOU NAME SOME RECENT PROJECTS YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
We work on a huge number of projects at Harbor and I have a hand in most of them in one way or another. Harbor just finished a bunch of really great films that are making the festival rounds including Jim Jarmusch’s new film, Only Lovers Left Alive and David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.
NAME THREE PIECES OF TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT.
Though not very technical, my french press, a few good pens and my record player. I’m guess I’m an analog guy at heart.
