Behind the title….
This post pro enjoys pressure, early mornings and getting home in time to hang with his son.
NAME: Brady Betzel
COMPANY: Bunim/Murray Productions in Van Nuys, California.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY?
We are a production and post facility wrapped in a family of professionals.
WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE?
WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
I am responsible for organization, input and output of all elements (QuickTimes, audio, footage, graphics, etc.) Organization includes grouping footage (up to six or seven cameras with isolated audio) by auxiliary timecode, preparing Avid ScriptSync scripts, export cuts for approval/review on FTP sites or internal approval site), preparing episodes for online video and audio departments, and editing extra scenes if available.
One aspect of the job that I really have come to like is mentoring/teaching newer assistant editors about proper organization, workflow and general post-production competency and the urgency it requires. Help to shape Bunim/Murray’s overall assistant editor quality, internal checks and balances, as well as external hire testing.
WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE THE MOST ABOUT WHAT FALLS UNDER THAT TITLE?
The amount of organization and menial tasks required to create a cohesive and organized ecosphere within the post environment. From organizing tapes by date, cast members names, and/or both to watching every second of footage over a month or two to separate out every piece of b-roll that is being shot.
Another aspect that most people don’t think about is the skill of dealing with different personalities and their concept of time. One person may ask for an export and realize that it will take 40 minutes, another person may ask for it and 10 minutes later ask if it’s done. Being able to divide and conquer different personalities is about 40 percent of the job, I think.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
I love troubleshooting and solving problems. If the ISIS isn’t showing media as being online I like a little bit of the pressure to figure out how to get it back. Deleting a database for 2,000 files in the hopes that it rebuilds properly is a little bit of a rush. Weird, I know.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
My computer crashing.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY?
Early morning. I would rather get to work at 6am and leave before dark than get in at noon and work late. I like to ramp up when I get to work, work by myself and sort out my thoughts. Then I’m ready to go when everyone shows up. Plus, I like to make it home to give my son a bath.
IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THIS JOB, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD?
CAN YOU NAME SOME RECENT PROJECTS YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
Bad Girls Club 10 & 11, The Real Housewives of New York City and Bethenny Ever After.
NAME THREE PIECES OF TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT.
The Internet, my DVR and a Wacom Tablet.
