NAME: Jordan Moser (@AzRmusic, facebook.com/azrmusic)
COMPANY: New York City’s Mixology Post (http://mixologypost.com)
WHAT DOES MIXOLOGY DO?
We’re a creative audio company that helps brands define their image through sound and music.
WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE?
WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
Every day is something different. One day might be mixing a promo spot for a major TV network and the next might be redefining a company’s brand through original music. It’s a mixed bag but it keeps you on your toes!
WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE THE MOST ABOUT WHAT FALLS UNDER THAT TITLE?
I’d say the biggest surprise is that sound engineers only get their hands on a fraction of the material that goes on air.
These days so much sound mixing and sound design is done by video editors!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
Composing. As much as I love the technical aspects of mixing, it’s great to get in a creative mindset and come up with a really cool piece of original music and build up a spot from scratch.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Probably noise clean up, which is a monotonous but necessary evil in audio post. Oftentimes audio reaches us in very poor condition, so we use a number of plug-ins to reduce the noise and maintain the intelligibility of the dialog.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY?
My favorite time of day is actually in the early hours of the morning. When I’m immersed in a project, it’s much easier to work after everyone goes to bed and there are fewer distractions. That’s when the real magic happens.
IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THIS JOB, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD?
I would probably be a starving musician, or a DJ.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS PROFESSION? HOW EARLY ON DID YOU KNOW THIS WOULD BE YOUR PATH?
I chose this profession because it allows me to be both creative and technical, and work on a plethora of different projects with a wide range of clients. I knew I loved audio when I got my first 8-track recorded at 16 years old. Two years later I interned at my first audio post studio.
CAN YOU NAME SOME RECENT PROJECTS YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
I recently did the music for the Xbox One launch, which was a lot of fun and A LOT of work. To top it off, it was in 5.1 surround! I also did the sonic rebranding and sound design for Ion Television and the Reelz Channel.
NAME THREE PIECES OF TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT.
Auratones – My favorite monitors because of their flat response. They’re easy on the ears!
Waves LA2A Compressor ‑ Works great on just about everything. Simple interface.
Melodyne – An amazing plug-in. It works fantastic on vocals, but sometimes I’ll even use it for dialog fixes or fixing an out-of-tune guitar.
WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS DO YOU FOLLOW?
On Facebook I follow Teenage Engineering, Arturia, AC Gears. On Twitter- Dancing Astronaut (music blog), Mashable, Sirius XM Radio. On LinkedIn: Mixology Audio Post (of course), New York Audio Post, Post Sound Mixers
WHAT DO YOU DO TO DE-STRESS FROM ALL THAT COMES WITH THE JOB?
Lots of deep breaths help. Knowing when to get up from the console and take a break is very important. Also finding a way to laugh at the situation.
I also find taking time for travel helps a lot. After working hard for Mixology Post for almost four years, I’m taking some time off to travel to Central America and China. Traveling always helps me regain perspective and come up with new ideas.
