Meet the Owner: Tone Visuals’ Brian Buongiorno

NAME: Brian Buongiorno

COMPANY: Austin, Texas-based Tone Visuals.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY?
We are a post-production boutique specializing in digital color grading, 2D visual effects and finishing. We also have Tone Tags, which is a custom searchable database platform that we can provide for our clients.

WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE?
Creative Director/Colorist-Finishing Artist/Founder

WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
I am involved in all aspects of our work, from bidding and pre-production to on-set VFX supervision to dailies, final color grading, VFX and finishing.

WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE THE MOST ABOUT WHAT FALLS UNDER THAT TITLE?
That I try to keep my hand in everything we do. Owning your own business means that ultimately it is you that is responsible for the final product. This means properly delegating and trusting that others will do their best work, but also having a second set of eyes on everything.

I have an acronym that I am fond of using: MNMCET, which stand for “Make no mistakes, check everything twice.”

It is the mistakes that really kill the positive momentum and damage the trust that your clients have in you.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED OVER THE YEARS ABOUT RUNNING A BUSINESS?
The need to work smart. We work smart by really getting involved in the post process as early as possible. This actually falls under pre-production and production.  For example, we often meet with our clients before they begin shooting to help determine the most efficient means to get what they need. We also do on-set supervision to help ensure that all the elements we need for a particular VFX shot are covered. Sometime we even do tests of VFX shots beforehand so that everyone has a comfort level going into the final stages of production and post.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT KEEPING CLIENTS HAPPY?
Keeping our clients happy requires that we go above and beyond… always. Whether it’s the work that we do, the client comforts we provide or just maintaining a positive and creative attitude. There is just no room for mediocrity in our company, and we always strive to show up with our best game faces on. Our clients really appreciate our attention to detail and sense of team effort here at Tone Visuals.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
I love helping make someone’s vision become a reality.

WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Sometimes the stress of delivering good work on time can be frustrating, but we always find a way to do it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY?
Early morning, before 8am. I’m an early bird, and I love to get a calm peaceful start to the day.

IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THIS JOB, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD?
I’d be an editor or director of photography.

CAN YOU NAME SOME RECENT CLIENTS?
