Behind the Title: Fluid editor John Piccolo

NAME: John Piccolo (@editfishcook)

COMPANY:  New York City’s Fluid (@fluidny), which has offices in Los Angeles as well

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY?
What I love about Fluid is that we are a one-stop shop. If I’m editing a spot that needs graphics, music, sound design or visual effects, I often team up with my co-workers to bring rough cuts and final cuts to new and, sometimes, unexpected levels.

WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE?
Editor

WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
Visual storytelling. It’s always exciting when a director or creative sees their vision pieced together for the first time. An idea that has spent months on paper is finally brought to life. It’s definitely fulfilling to collaborate with the projects creators to hone and refine their idea into the final product.

WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE THE MOST ABOUT WHAT FALLS UNDER THAT TITLE?
Occasionally during intense projects I may need to act as a mediator. Creatives are passionate and very opinionated about their work, and every so often things get tense. I’m very even keeled, so I think that rubs off and helps with the vibe in my room.

WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE?
Mainly Avid Media Composer, but I once used a salad bowl and some cheerios to make a sound effect.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
Meeting new people. The advertising world has such an interesting mix of people from all walks of life. I enjoy making new friends on each project and seeing the dynamic of how different teams work together.

WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
Making client changes that the agency doesn’t agree with.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY?
I’m definitely a morning person… I am always up early whether it’s during the work week or weekends. I enjoy the quiet time before everyone is out and about.

IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THIS JOB, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD?
I recently got my captain’s license, so I would probably be a fishing guide or I would be fishing commercially for swordfish and tuna.

HOW EARLY ON DID YOU KNOW THIS WOULD BE YOUR PATH?
In college I shot a rap video for one of my fraternity brothers, and while editing on iMovie in the college library I fell in love with editing. I would love to recut the video but the dailies were in the trunk of my car, which was stolen in 2007.

Mentos “Never Surrender”

CAN YOU NAME SOME RECENT PROJECTS YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
Mentos with McKinney, Scope and Crest with PKT and a WWE spot for the SyFy channel, to name a few.

WHAT IS THE PROJECT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?
I recently produced/directed (and edited) my first piece of content. My cousin just opened a restaurant and we shot his friends around a chef’s table during dinner service. We all love how it came out, so hopefully it will lead to more production-type projects in the future.

NAME THREE PIECES OF TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT.
The GPS on my boat, Apple TV and my iPhone.

DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK?
I have an AM/FM radio on my desk so I normally listen to sports radio. Mike Francesa on WFAN and Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO DE-STRESS FROM IT ALL?
I go fishing to relax and decompress. I love being way offshore tuna fishing with my buddies, no cell phone service and some good Italian food.
