NAME: Jason Bowdach
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPANY?
Cinetic Studios is a boutique-style color and finishing studio that was created to provide easier access to high-end color grading and finishing services that most assume are out of their reach.
Our slogan, “We Tell Stories With Color,” represents our belief that color is a very powerful narrative tool that shouldn’t be overlooked. On the technical side, we take a bleeding-edge approach, as we feel the latest technology allows us to offer services that are cost-effective yet quality driven.
WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE? Colorist and Online Editor
WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
I am responsible for all visual aspects of the project, once the edit has been completed and
locked. I perform a technical quality check, conform the edit within DaVinci Resolve, color grade, add any beauty fixes or final visual effects and create deliverables. As I explain to our clients, we “run with you to the finish line!”
WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE THE MOST ABOUT WHAT FALLS UNDER THAT TITLE?
It includes everything plus the kitchen sink. I’ve had projects that required everything from resizing all shots due to an error during the edit to painting out “wardrobe malfunctions.” I enjoy being as flexible as my skill set allows, and expanding it when it doesn’t.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
My favorite part of being a colorist is the constant creative and technical challenges. It forces me to always be on my toes, never getting too comfortable with my current tools and techniques. I also enjoy the collaborative nature of the process by working together with a director to best define the project’s story with color.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE?
My least favorite part of the job is paperwork.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY?
My favorite times of day are evenings and late nights. I find it easiest to relax and work while the rest of the world is “disconnected.” There is a peaceful and hypnotic quality that helps clear my mind.
IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE THIS JOB, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD?
If I wasn’t in my current occupation, I would likely still be searching for my creative outlet.
HOW EARLY ON DID YOU KNOW THIS WOULD BE YOUR PATH?
I’ve been making films since I was 15, so I knew I would be involved with film in some shape or form.
CAN YOU NAME SOME RECENT PROJECTS YOU HAVE WORKED ON?
Some of my recent projects include a #SundanceMoments social media campaign for Adobe and Dell and a short film for Life & Thyme focusing on the popular coffee shop Rival Bros Coffee.
WHAT IS THE PROJECT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?
The short film focusing on Rival Bros Coffee was an amazing piece of storytelling that I was thrilled to be a part of. I’m particularly proud of the project, as it was a challenge to establish the look and feel requested by director Mike Collins without it looking fake.
NAME THREE PIECES OF TECHNOLOGY YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT
My phone, the Internet and my “Computers Control Station.”
WHAT SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS DO YOU FOLLOW?
I’m a huge fan of Lifehacker, NoFilmSchool and Gizmodo.
DO YOU LISTEN TO MUSIC WHILE YOU WORK?
If I am not checking picture and sound sync, I play music fairly often when I’m working.
CARE TO SHARE YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC TO WORK TO?
I don’t listen to my normal music while working, but usually movie soundtracks. I’m quite fond of soundtracks from David Fincher and Chris Nolan films in particular.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO DE-STRESS FROM IT ALL?
I decided to work with color because it was my dream to do so, and that simple fact keeps me quite grounded, no matter the stress or deadlines. That being said, quality time with my incredible fiancée Jessica and our beagle puppy, Olivia, melts stress pretty easily.
