2 Chainz’s 2 Dolla Bill gets VFX from Timber

Santa Monica’s Timber, known for its VMA-winning work on the Kendrick Lamar music video “Humble, provided visual effects and post production for the latest music video from 2 Chainz, featuring E-40 and Lil Wayne — 2 Dolla Bill.

The video begins with a group of people in a living room with the artist singing, “I’m rare” while holding a steak. It transitions to a poker game where the song continues with “I’m rare, like a two dollar bill.” We then see a two dollar bill with Thomas Jefferson singing the phrase as well. The video takes us back to the living room, the poker game, an operating room, a kitchen and other random locations.

Artists at collaborating company Kevin provided 2D visual effects for the music video, including the scene with the third eye.

According to Timber creative director/partner Kevin Lau, “The main challenge for this project was the schedule. It was a quick turnaround initially, so it was great to be able to work in tandem with offline to get ahead of the schedule. This also allowed us to work closely with the director and implement some his requests to enhance the video after it was shot.”

Timber got involved early on in the project and was on set while they shot the piece. The studio called on Autodesk Flame for clean-up, compositing and enhancement work, as well as the animation of the talking money.

Lau was happy Timber got the chance to be on set. “It was very useful to have a VFX supervisor on set for this project, given the schedule and scope of work. We were able to flag any concerns/issues right away so they didn’t become bigger problems in post.”

Arcade Edit’s Geoff Hounsell edited the piece. Daniel de Vue from A52 provided the color grade.
