Behind the Title: UCLA Extension Instructor Barry Goch

NAME: Barry Goch (@gochya)

COMPANY: UCLA Extension Entertainment Studies

WHAT IS UCLA EXTENSION?
UCLA Extension is the continuing education division of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). UCLA Extension offers over 5,000 open-enrollment courses and 180+ certificate programs with online and on-campus learning

WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE?
Instructor, Post Production for Film and Television

WHAT DOES THAT ENTAIL?
I plan and instruct students in all facets of post, from dailies to delivery, with emphasis on engaging students to lifelong learning in the ever-changing industry.

I create, manage and implement course agenda, lesson plans and activities to meet course objectives. I organize and facilitate hands-on field trips to post production facilities to engage students, enhance techniques and develop interest to ensure maximum learning and knowledge retention.

Producer Dave Lifshin, Barry and Greg Hedgepath (L-R) at UCLA Royce Hall and class visit to Dolby.

I augment my lectures with hands-on experiences for the students. For example, in the class on dailies, I brought in my Blackmagic Ursa Mini camera and demonstrated for the class how camera set-up impacts post. For the VR/AR class, I brought in my VR headset and the AR graphic novel, Masters of the Sun, for the students to experience first hand.

WHAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE THE MOST ABOUT WHAT FALLS UNDER THAT TITLE?
The amount of work needed to prepare for each class. The world of post is moving so fast that the curriculum constantly needs updating. I can’t assign a book for the class since any book about post today is out of date before it’s printed!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
It’s extremely fulfilling to impart my experiences to the students and receive their sincere gratitude at the end of the course. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.

I tried to broaden the perspective for my students by bringing in guest speakers. I’ve had great guest speakers such as Greg Hedgepath from the Formosa group and producer Dave Lifshin. I learn as much from my guest speakers as the students do.

HOW DO YOU STAY CURRENT IN TECHNOLOGY AND WORKFLOWS?
As a regular contributor to postPerspective, I have the opportunity to cover all the major conferences related to post production and share that information with my students. For example, I attended the HPA Tech Retreat and learned about how AI will impact post production.

WHAT IS YOUR DAY JOB AND HOW DOES THAT HELP WITH YOUR CLASS?
I’m a finishing artist at a boutique post facility in Burbank called The Foundation. I’m finishing scripted shows, and I take this hands-on experience to the classroom.

IS THERE A MOMENT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?
A class trip to Dolby had the most impact. I had given a lecture about Dolby Atmos and laser projection then we experienced it first hand at the Dolby office. That was a highlight for the me as well as the students.
